Crystallization Experiment - Science

Hey, guys today in science we did an experiment about crystallization. In the experiment, we used borax, water and waited for our next science class to see if it crystalized. Crystallization is the process by which a solid form. This experiment was easy and not complicated, if you ever get the chance it would be a simple and fun experiment to learn and do.

Aim: Google: Crystallization is used in the chemistry laboratory as a purification technique for solids.

Equipment:

  • Beaker
  • Heat mat
  • Tripod
  • Spatula
  • Gauze mat
  • Bunsen Burner
  • Borax
  • Pipe Cleaner

Method:

  1. Boil water in a beaker on a Gauze mat and Tripod over a Bunsen Burner.
  2. When boiled turn the gas off.
  3. Add spatula heaps of Borax, waiting for it to dissolve until adding more.
  4. When the solution is saturated, leave to cool with a pipe cleaner suspended in the beaker.

Cleaning up - Make sure all the heating equipment goes in the bottom tray and the glassware and spatula are in the top tray. Wait for the equipment to cool before touching it.

Conclusion: This crystallization process is very simple and easy but shows the main concept of crystals and their form. The crystals harden and were very big. I personally think that we should have used string instead of pipe cleaners because they seem to be more effective and have a better result.

Discussion: Where is crystallization useful in the real world? Crystallization in the real world is very important because it helps make basic needs for example salt.

Why do crystals make interesting shapes? Crystals are formed in many different shapes, it depends on the environment, temperature, pressure, chemical conditions and the amount of space available these are some of the things that affect their growth. Crystals are solid material in which the atoms are arranged in regular geometrical patterns.

Fun Fact: Some people know crystals promote good energy and help the body get rid of negative energy for physical and emotional benefits. Crystals are known as an ancient form of medicine with theories borrowed from Hinduism and Buddhism.
