Gold Rush Discovery

Hi, guys today I will be sharing what we have been learning for social studies. For social studies, we are working on the 1861 gold rush and basically, we are doing a conclusion about we have learned through this subject.

What are 4 things I discovered while learning about the Gold Rush in 1861: I learnt that there were not many women doing gold mining for the reason of there husbands working and the wifes staying at home and doing the housework. The gold brought a lot of popularity and thousands of people from around the country and all around the world came to be rich but not much became rich and successful. But the living space was not so good it was very hard it the winter periods to stay warm and dry. It would take weeks to need supplies to arrive. Some men lived in tents and shacks, some were so dispirited they lived in caves. It became the biggest city in New Zealand with miners. Was the one who began the gold rush in 1861 near the Tuapeka River. One day he spotted gold in his pan. He even quoted “Shining like a star in Orion on a dark frosty night”

What are 4 things you have learnt about the Chinese immigrants that came to New Zealand: I learnt a lot about the miners and the immigrants that came especially, Chinese immigrants. They play a huge roll in the gold rush time not that they were miners but because they left their homes and families to one day be rich by finding gold. There were also well known in Chinese communities. Around 5000 Chinese miners moved to New Zealand in the gold rush time. They were paid less and there were about 7000 Chinese miners. From 1907 all Chinese people who arrived had to take an English reading test, from 1908 Chinese who wanted to leave the country temporally needed to re-entry permits which were thumb printed. There was a common belief that the Chinese carried infections disseise and were unhygienic.

Discrimination is: when being hated for your nationality, race, sex, gender identity, past life chooses, criminal record or just simple lifestyles. It sometimes means not fitting into social groups and being bullied in different ways. The Chinese were actually believed to threaten to swamp the European population.
